The perfect way to reduce single use plastics in Japan

Compact-a-case

What

A built in cover designed to for an umbrella, to use in Japan when travelling/commuting, as a replacement for single use plastic covers; overall reducing the amount of waste being burnt and the damage to the planet

The Project Brief

To design a predominately plastic based product made to enhance urban living.

- have a clear demonstration on how the product is commercialised

Trip to Toyko

Narrowing down

After my research, I decided to narrow my direction down further. My project should aims to eliminate the need for single use plastics.


Japan incinerates 58% of its plastic waste annually, one of the largest contributors being single use carrier bags. The nation as a whole goes through 30 billion plastic bags, therefore I have decided to focus my work around the word

Exploring single use plastics and however to avoid them, along with space spacing were my initial ideas to fit around the word waste

Ideation

I developed my designs from my initial 'waste' box designing exercise focusing on space saving, minimalisation of single use plastics and modular products in conjunction with my personas

Testing

My initial idea was to change the umbrella mechanism to allow it to freely move inside and out. However an issue I found with the design when testing was that standing in the rain and having up open and close the zips is time consuming and inconvenient.

 

The design, although it works, is very fiddly and difficult to administer with a few smooth motions.
